IN-CHARACTER:
Character name: Matthew Murdock
Character journal:
echovocation
Series name: Daredevil
Canon notes: Between seasons 1 & 2
Species: Human
History: I am, thank god, apping Matt from the Netflix version of Daredevil so there's considerably less to go through. The wiki gives a decent covering of the events, but I can explain in more detail if necessary.
Personality:
Like most characters, Matt is a very multi-faceted person but he tends to take that description to an extreme. He has the face that he presents to most people he meets; the somewhat meek but sharp-witted, well-spoken lawyer. A kind man who just wants to help but won't allow himself to be pushed around, a man who puts the needs of others above his own, who hardly ever starts and fight and certainly wouldn't even dream of finishing one. Foggy calls it his 'handsome wounded duck' routine, and for good reason. It's a personality Matt presents to put -and keep- people off their guard. Not for any particularly malicious reason; it's not as if he's scheming to make people like him, but that polite tone you take with the cashier is just the same one he wears with most of his daily interactions.
His close friends, they get a little bit more: they get the sarcasm, they get the stubbornness, they get the spike of self-righteousness he sometimes draws around himself like a cloak. They also get the fierce loyalty and protectiveness, they get even more of that bullheadedness, they get the respect and the trust. Matthew doesn't have very many people he would call his friends but those he does have, he holds them close to his heart. These people see the Matt that he doesn't share with clients, acquaintances, but they're still getting the watered-down version. Matt almost never allows himself to be vulnerable and to people he considers friends, while he trusts their opinions somewhat, they don't get that.
Next tier up is the family tier: there are only a tiny, tiny number of people in this category and they practically had to bulldoze their way in by force. Foggy, Karen, Father Lantom, Claire to an extent- they see the softer parts of Matt, and the darker parts sometimes. He's still cagey, still choosey with what he shares but these are the people that can get him to open up at all. Matt feels safer leaving his heart in their hands and it's from these people alone that he'll allow himself to draw comfort, that he'll express (sometimes) the things that are troubling him...but ultimately, he still has difficulty trusting these people, even with how close they are.
This is through no fault of theirs. Matthew has built his life upon the idea of control, that he has to keep an intense grip on his control in order to avoid losing anything more he loves. He has to control himself, he has to control his abilities, and to a degree he has to control the people around him. The best way he goes about doing this is controling what they know about him, but sometimes he'll even control people with lies or by withholding the truth. While in his heart he may believe he's doing it to protect them, Matthew hardly ever stops to consider how other people might feel about this kind of manipulation- or worse, he doesn't care. He's learned how to be so fiercely self-sufficient that Matthew believes he knows what's best, must take care of his own problems, must shoulder others.
Which makes it all the more hilarious how he plays up the 'poor blind man' act, considering how much difficulty he has asking for real help. His mentor taught him to push people away, that close relationships, that a happy life just isn't something someone like him is allowed to have, and though he's tried to defy this definition it seems to have seeped into him anyway. He knows it, he's aware of it, but like anybody else with flaws, Matthew struggles with it daily.
Another thing he struggles with are his darker impulses. Matthew has a lot of anger, a lot of resentment and a lot of fear of what this means for his immortal soul. His faith sometimes feeds into it, and sometimes it helps him; as a Catholic (his piety seems to slide along an impressive spectrum) he seems to believe in the existence of true good and true evil, or at least he doesn't deny the concepts. Sometimes he wonders if he has evil inside of him, if perhaps it's stronger than the evil inside others, inside of every person. He knows that the enjoyment he finds in causing pain to others isn't 'good,' per se, but he can't seem to stop himself. He likes to cite his grandmother, a much more devout Catholic than he or his father, when she says this: "Be careful of the Murdock boys. They got the devil in them." He seems to have taken her words to heart, and to some level resents the moniker 'devil of Hell's Kitchen' as a result...but even worse, sometimes he likes it.
There's no doubt that Matthew does indeed want to help people, wants for good people to be free to live happy, peaceful lives, but he constantly struggles with the 'right' way to go about achieving this. He loves, very strongly and powerfully, but he also feels rage and a viciousness that he knows isn't 'right.' Matthew is almost constantly at odds with himself, causes a lot of his own problems, but there's one other phrase from his family that he takes to heart. His late father, Battlin' Jack Murdock, would always tell him this, and it's possibly this that kept Matthew alive as long as he's been despite all he's been through:
"We're Murdocks. We get hit a lot, but we always get back up."
Abilities: Matthew was involved in an accident as a child that took his sight, but ramped up his other senses to an incredible intensity. He can feel vibrations in the ground and floor from a block away; he can hear a whisper through three walls and two panes of glass, he can smell what someone had for breakfast on their breath a day after they've had it. His senses are so powerful that he very nearly can see, in a sense; gradations in temperature can tell him where someone is in a room, hearing their heartbeats, their breathing, even the sound of air striking against something is enough to help him place it.
That's about it for powers though! No superhuman strength or speed; his reflexes are incredible, but not superhuman; they only seem like that because a) he's trained them so much that his reaction time is fantastic and b) he bumbles about to keep his cover so when he reacts sharply it's much more shocking.
